Race for the cure 2008

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

June 21st, we were excited to participate in the Seattle Komen Race for the Cure again.  It’s become quite the tradition.  We were sad Mom couldn’t walk with us this year, but we did meet up with Christian’s 2nd grade teacher so that was great.  We had a great time for a great cause.  Afterwards, we drove up to Arlington to celebrate Kalie’s graduation!

Baseball camp

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Brandon’s first foray into baseball had its ups and downs.  The first week of camp, he thought it was really fun.  This week, they had different coaches… much more intense coaches.  For the most part, camp has been really fun and not at all the serious baseball Christian just finished with the Padres.

Here are the boys ready for their first day of camp for the summer:

Christian swimming

Christian started this summer in Youth Safety 2, and graduated to Youth Safety 3 after the first session. In YS3, he got to learn the beginnings of diving! He’ll still be in Youth Safety 3 next June when we re-enroll him.

Brandon

Brandon started this summer in Preschool Safety 2 and remained there for both sessions. He did pass Preschool Safety 2 after the August session, Yay Brandon! He’ll be in Youth Safety 1 next summer, because he’ll be 6.

Alyson swimming

Alyson spent both sessions this summer in Parent Infant/Toddler, which was very fun. Once she had that noodle tied around her, she was off and swimming. She is now enrolled to continue into Fall in a Preschool Safety 1 class at 1pm, which will be great because she’ll be done and home before the boys get home from school. She’s lucky they let her move up… they aren’t supposed to move up to Preschool until they turn 3, so hopefully she’ll listen to her teacher and do what she’s supposed to.

Alyson did it!

Alyson

I stepped out of the shower and heard Brandon immediately saying, “Alyson is playing with the pictures on your computer!”

For the record, I don’t believe for an instant that she managed to open Photo Booth, change the settings, AND take the picture, all by herself.

Christian’s Birthday Cake

Whew, what a day!!!

Christian was off to school as usual at 7:15. I got Brandon to preschool as usual at 8:55. Then the craziness started. I arrived at the school at 10 to help with their Earth Day project, doing some planting in the school courtyard.

I had six kids, a shovel, some trowels, some rakes, a big package of compost, an assortment of ground-cover plants, and a fairly large area. At first, I thought this was the best spot, because my whole group would be working in one place. Boy was I wrong. Those groups that had several smaller spaces each had it easier.

I realized when after 30 minutes some groups were planting and we were nowhere close that my project management skills do not extend into the realm of gardening and 7-8 year olds. But we had a blast, and in the end all the plants were in the ground.

I ran home while the kids were at lunch and picked up the ice cream cups we bought for his class party. That party was the coolest thing. While everyone enjoyed their ice cream, the class brainstormed what they like about Christian, what he’s good at, and then they got to interview him. Some of his answers were surprising… he’d rather be a professional skateboarder than a pro-baseball player. He wouldn’t change his name. The kids all commented that he’s good at sports, and he’s good at helping others, and he’s a good friend.

After school, Grandma Julie took him shopping for sandals for the summer, which he LOVES. Then we were off to a wacky first playoff game (we played the team with the crazy rule enforcement again… although our coaches called them on a serious rule at the beginning this time). We had a great turnout to cheer Christian on, but he was awfully nervous and struck out the first two times he was up. The third time he had a great hit. The Dodgers really came out to play tonight and won the game. Yay, we won’t have a conflict for Christian’s kid-party.

Just before leaving the ballpark, Alyson, who had slept most of the game, got sick. I don’t know what the deal with that is. She got sick and slept a lot last Saturday too. We may be off to a doctor to help figure out what’s going on.

Anyway, then we had everyone back to our house for cake (which Alyson brilliantly swirled the frosting around on) and ice cream. We were honored to have two families from church attend the game and celebrate Christian’s birthday with us.

It was a very full and crazy and tiring day 🙂 But Happy 8th, Christian, we’re proud of you!

Brandon’s latest accomplishment!

Brandon suddenly last weekend decided he could ride a bike without training wheels (in fact, this was how he woke us up… Daddy, take my training wheels off!). Yay Brandon!

Four legged excitement

Raccoon

I’ve seen my first real-life, up close and personal raccoon! Apparently we have a raccoon living nearby, and he (she?) has made an appearance twice this week. This time, we were all home to observe, as it presumably looked for bugs or something in the grass out back.Brandon is utterly terrified that it will get in the house and hurt us. He’s also terrified that the cats will hurt us. He doesn’t like how riled up the cats get when they see another four-legged creature outside. I’ve tried explaining that the cats are just trying to protect us, but I don’t think he bought it.

Haven’t found much information on the web yet. I’m not sure if I should be concerned about it or not.

Happy belated Easter!

Easter 2007

We had a nice Easter yesterday, managing to hunt Easter eggs in the sunshine. We had a nice visit with Grandma Julie, and dyed eggs in the evening. While we missed our tradition of spending the day in Arlington, it was really nice to stay home too.I’m attaching pics of Alyson and Brandon from Easter… Christian was a little grumpy all afternoon and didn’t hunt eggs with them.
