Alyson did it!

Alyson

I stepped out of the shower and heard Brandon immediately saying, “Alyson is playing with the pictures on your computer!”

For the record, I don’t believe for an instant that she managed to open Photo Booth, change the settings, AND take the picture, all by herself.

It must be summer…

Stood in line at 4:40 this morning to get the kids signed up for swimming. There are advantages to being 10th in line. There was no problem getting them all signed up for lessons in the same time slot. I was hoping for early afternoon classes, but they don’t exist. It worked out ok, because there was a parent/toddler class offered at the same time, so even Alyson is signed up. She’ll love it, and I won’t have to keep her out of the pool during the boys’ lessons. The downside is that I won’t be able to watch the boys. Even that worked out, though, because Bill should be able to come watch. Fun fun.

I AM!

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Alyson has learned the wonderful definition of the phrase I AM! from her brothers.

me: Alyson, eat that nectarine in the kitchen!

Alyson: I AM! (as she’s standing in the middle of the living room)

I AM! obviously means I AM hearing you talk but I AM choosing to do it my way.

We’re using our imaginations!

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

It’s bedtime in our house. A typically very chaotic hour. The kids were finally all in bed, tucked and covered, and Alyson insisted she couldn’t sleep. I suggested she close her eyes and imagine the puppet show we saw this morning at Brandon’s graduation (Yay Brandon!). She squeezed her eyes closed and smiled. The kids and I talked for a minute about imagining something that makes us happy when we try to sleep. Here’s what they said:

Alyson: Purple color makes me happy!

Brandon: Imagining Christian doing good at baseball makes me happy!

Christian: Imagining one Brandon talking to me, then two Brandon’s talking to me, then three Brandon’s talking to me makes me happy because it’s math!

What a crew we have here!

First day of self-employment

Monday, June 11th, 2007

This morning, I was up two minutes before my alarm clock went off. 6:08am. It’s now 8:15 and I have already:

– Showered, dressed, wiped down the bathroom counter, put away the tub toys

– Started a load of laundry and folded one

– Fed the kids eggs and toast (in three rounds of breakfast because of course they don’t get up at the same time), ate breakfast myself and took my vitamins

– Soaked half of the sink with bleach for an hour and scrubbed it shiny (can you tell I’m Flying?

– ran the dishwasher

– talked with a client

– got Christian off to school, and Brandon’s ready to go shortly

Still on the agenda for today:

– a few more client calls

– Costco run

– Flylady’s home blessing hour (vacuum, dust, mop, clean mirrors/doors, change sheets)

– and two hours or so of bookkeeping work

– 5:30 doctor’s appointment for both boys

Now I’m just hopeful I can keep this up 🙂 I’d like to start working in some exercise too and I have a couple of moms around here that are walking so that should be do-able (once Brandon is done with preschool on Wednesday).

Christian’s birthday

Christian’s Birthday Cake

Whew, what a day!!!

Christian was off to school as usual at 7:15. I got Brandon to preschool as usual at 8:55. Then the craziness started. I arrived at the school at 10 to help with their Earth Day project, doing some planting in the school courtyard.

I had six kids, a shovel, some trowels, some rakes, a big package of compost, an assortment of ground-cover plants, and a fairly large area. At first, I thought this was the best spot, because my whole group would be working in one place. Boy was I wrong. Those groups that had several smaller spaces each had it easier.

I realized when after 30 minutes some groups were planting and we were nowhere close that my project management skills do not extend into the realm of gardening and 7-8 year olds. But we had a blast, and in the end all the plants were in the ground.

I ran home while the kids were at lunch and picked up the ice cream cups we bought for his class party. That party was the coolest thing. While everyone enjoyed their ice cream, the class brainstormed what they like about Christian, what he’s good at, and then they got to interview him. Some of his answers were surprising… he’d rather be a professional skateboarder than a pro-baseball player. He wouldn’t change his name. The kids all commented that he’s good at sports, and he’s good at helping others, and he’s a good friend.

After school, Grandma Julie took him shopping for sandals for the summer, which he LOVES. Then we were off to a wacky first playoff game (we played the team with the crazy rule enforcement again… although our coaches called them on a serious rule at the beginning this time). We had a great turnout to cheer Christian on, but he was awfully nervous and struck out the first two times he was up. The third time he had a great hit. The Dodgers really came out to play tonight and won the game. Yay, we won’t have a conflict for Christian’s kid-party.

Just before leaving the ballpark, Alyson, who had slept most of the game, got sick. I don’t know what the deal with that is. She got sick and slept a lot last Saturday too. We may be off to a doctor to help figure out what’s going on.

Anyway, then we had everyone back to our house for cake (which Alyson brilliantly swirled the frosting around on) and ice cream. We were honored to have two families from church attend the game and celebrate Christian’s birthday with us.

It was a very full and crazy and tiring day 🙂 But Happy 8th, Christian, we’re proud of you!
